God bless America, land that I love;
stand beside her, and guide her,
through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
to the ocean, white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home;
God bless America, my home, sweet home!

Too often referred to as merely a “Disco Queen”, Donna Summer’s forty-year career gave us so much more than that oft misunderstood and maligned genre. Without question, Donna Summer’s groundbreaking albums were a key soundtrack in the original Disco culture. Although it’s not called Disco anymore, the music evolved into House and similar sub-genres that are also fun to dance to! Meanwhile, Donna just kept singing and turning out great new music all these years. I hope you’ll enjoy some of the selections I’ve included here, and maybe discover something you never knew she did!
Donna Summer – Star Spangled Banner
Donna Summer – State Of Independence
Donna Summer – Aunt Oona (from Altoona)
Undoubtedly, Donna Summer loved singing more than acting; her only serious role was in the movie “Thank God It’s Friday”. I have no idea why she chose to do a couple of cameos on “Family Matters”, but I’m sure glad she did! Aunt Oona’s “singing in church” definitely showcases Donna’s Gospel music roots!
Donna Summer – I Feel Love (Live 1977 a)
This song was so cutting edge when it first came out! In this video, a live band attempts to simulate the synthesized sounds of the song:
Donna Summer – I Feel Love (Live 1977 b)
The band does it’s best to imitate the synthesized sound of this song, but it comes off as more of a jazz version to me. Donna introduces the band members (starting with her sisters!) and then breaks into a delightful dance, the spirit within her shining so brightly!
Donna Summer – I Feel Love – (Live 2005 Belgium)
Live in Belgium – 2005
Donna Summer – Woman
Donna’s younger sisters, Dara Lynn Bernard and Mary Ellen Bernard sang backup vocals on most of her albums and live shows.
